Responsibilities
Position function:
The Youth Camp Facilitator reports to the Recreation Manager and is accountable for the collaborative design, implementation, coordination, and evaluation of person-centered care related to the participants recreational and leisure wellbeing. The Youth Camp Facilitator ensures that the program establishes and achieves the goals that align with the mission and values of the organization and guidelines of the program.
Ø Collaborate in assessing the recreation needs and requirements of all residents to determine program offerings.
Ø Plan and implement leisure programs to ensure that these events align with youth camp participants’ goals and interests.
Ø Develop/ follow up with goals and create programs that develop skills and interests of participants and community inclusion.
Ø Supervise and lead program activities.
Ø Evaluate effectiveness of all programs and identify where new skills are needed.
Ø Liaise with the community to develop and enhance program inclusion.
Ø Collaborate in developing a calendar of events for the program that includes participants interests and goals.
Ø Maintain program documentation (where appropriate).
Ø Schedule community outings based on the interest of participants and arrange for transportation.
Ø Attending in-service and other educational opportunities as available.
Ø Collaborate in the organization, purchase, and maintenance of recreation department resources.
Ø Work collaboratively within the MMCG recreation department.
Ø Maintain confidentiality concerning participant information in accordance with PHIA (NS Personal Health Information Act) as well as employee and department information.
Ø Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Ø Completion of a Recreation Degree or Recreation Diploma, or related Degree or Diploma with a specialization in recreation/leisure/community development. Bachelor degree in social work or Diploma in Human Services will also be considered.
Ø Experience planning recreation programs & activities for youth.
Ø Interpersonal skills- empathy and supportive and sensitive to people.
Ø Leadership skills- good organization and planning skills, creative problem solver, good listening skills, clear oral and written skills.
Ø Valid Nova Scotia driver’s license and ability to transport residents as required.
Preferred
Ø Certifications: First Aid/CPR, Behavioral Crisis Management Training (MANDT, NVCI).
Ø Musical ability an asset.
Ø Experience in garden therapy or willingness to learn.
This position requires some evening, weekend and holiday work depending on program functions. Ability to work in environments that may have plants and animals as well as working out of doors. Must be in good mental and physical health and able to bend, lift, and stretch as required for job performance. The MMCG provides services for adults who may have physical limitations, intellectual disabilities, mental health concerns or dementia who, from time to time when upset, may exhibit behaviors.
Must possess a valid Nova Scotia’s license, insurance as per the policy of the organization and be willing to transport clients using own vehicle. Must provide a driver’s abstract upon hire.
