Position Scope:
The Long-Term Care Assistant (LTCA) is a supportive position that contributes to the activities of daily living for the residents. LTCAs report directly to the Assistant Director of Resident Care. LTCAs are a vital part of the multidisciplinary health care team that work alongside the Continuing Care Assistants (CCA) and licensed employees; Registered Nurses (RN) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN).
RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Work alongside CCAs and licensed staff and adhere to the guidance provided
· Assist in admission and in-house transfers as directed by the Charge Nurse.
· Light housekeeping duties such as tidying residents’/clients’ rooms and collecting the garbage, cleaning closets, hanging clothes, making beds, cleaning wash basins, dental care cups and caddies. Cleaning wheelchairs and cushions as well as marking residents’ initials on their personal items.
· Clean and make beds.
· Measure and record intake and outputs.
· Share in observing changes in resident’s condition and report observations to immediate Supervisor.
· Assist the CCA with bathing and personal care (i.e., transferring residents to and from the bed or bath, assisting the CCA with resident rolling in bed, gathering and setting up materials for CCAs to provide personal hygiene, a bath or shower and perform a resident back wash).
· Answer call bells and redirect when appropriate.
· Provide items of comfort, sitting with residents/clients and having purposeful conversations etc.
· Assist with the residents’ dining experience under the direction of the Supervisor. This would include assisting residents to and from the dining area.
· Sets up and clean tables in the dining areas; pour beverages; and delivery/retrieval of hydration mugs and meals to residents.
· Assist with oral hygiene as appropriate
· Shave residents with an electric razor only.
· Clean tub after each use.
· Empty bedpans, urinals, and commodes.
· Assists and supports residents in programming such as, but not limited to, recreation programs.
· Assists in the set-up and clean-up of the activity rooms.
· Attend in-service programs and other workshops as appropriate.
· Develop and maintain good public relations with residents, staff and visitors.
· Be familiar with fire, personnel, EMO policies etc. within the home.
· Has a commitment to staff and resident safety.
· Could be asked to perform 1:1 staffing for an individual resident/client.
QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS
· Grade 12 education or non-academic equivalent (to be determined by the employer).
· Clear Vulnerable Sector Check.
· WHIMS, or willing to complete withing probation
· Feeding with Sensitivity Training, or will be provided
· PACE, facility based will be provided
· Hand Hygiene and other courses as seen appropriate to this role.
· Has the ability to maintain regular attendance.
· Good oral and written communication.
· The ability to work shifts: days, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.
· Must have sound interpersonal, problem solving and organizational skills.
· Compassion, integrity, maturity, respect and a positive attitude are essential attributes.
· Previous experience in senior care, group home, caring for a family member/friend will be considered an asset.
· Must be willing to gain training to the role as per the facility’s policies and guidelines and as reflected in the job duties.
Hours of work: 8 hour shifts as required. Days, evenings, weekends, holidays, and call-ins.
